Shands Jacksonville Employee Donor Wall

Free flowing thoughts sometimes turn into free flowing designs...

Shands Hospital asked BE to design and build a display ackowledging the donations from their staff for various projects on campus to improve the quality of care for their patients and visitors. Response was overwhelming from the employees

Design Challenge
Uniquely display the donor names in a manner architecturally consistent with the lobby environment and also represent the City and it’s natural resources. The display needed to be bold to catch the attention of all who pass by.

The Study
We surveyed the lobby area at great length paying careful attention to wood finishes, lighting and surrounding colors and design. Sketching while observing the area was the best way to draw out designs and ideas integrating the display into it’s surroundings. Many photographs and measurements were taken as a reference to use back at our office.

Discussing with the Shand’s staff their thought process was of what they were trying to project with the display was the fulcrum in our design process. We heard them say, make the display bold yet traditional. Add elements of an organic nature. Say something about the City of Jacksonville. And most importantly give our employees recogition for their sacrifices.

The Solution
The display is a beautiful bold free flowing tribute that has many subtle symbols. The traditionally built base represents Shands and it’s strengh in the community. The parts of the stream which represents our River City is an organic free flowing shape that represents the people dedicated to Shands. Individuality of the employees is shown by the etching of 2 quotes from employees into the wooden base. The mission statement is highlighted by being internally illuminated along with the campaigns name, “OUR SHANDS JACKSONVILLE.”

Turning clients needs and ideas into tangible designs that enchance the surrounding environments are the reason we are in business.
